SALT LAKE CITY - The University of Utah softball team's 2009 schedule features 11 games against six opponents who finished the 2008 regular season in the top 25, including games against three schools who qualified for the Women's College World Series last season.
Utah went 28-27 (10-10 MWC) in Amy Hogue's first season as head coach. The Utes began their fall exhibition season at home in a doubleheader last Wednesday against Snow College. Utah hosts Utah State for a doubleheader Wednesday, and will play Salt Lake Community College Sept. 24 and Oct. 1. The fall season will come to a close with the team's annual `Red and White' scrimmages Oct. 16-18. The action will start at 2 p.m., each day.
"The excitement level for me as a coach is very high because we're going to be playing against a lot high-caliber programs," Hogue said. "I'm excited about the schedule we've been able to put together. The best way to find out where we stand as a team is to go against the teams that consistently make it to NCAA regionals and finals."
Utah opens its regular season by playing in six tournaments, beginning at the Red Desert Classic in St. George, Feb. 6-8. Utah travels to Las Vegas, Nev., for the Louisville Slugger Classic Feb. 13-15.
The Utes will participate in the Wildcat Invitational Feb. 20-22 in Tucson, Ariz., a tournament hosted by the University of Arizona, who advanced to the Women's College World Series last year and finished the regular season ranked seventh in the country. Utah will face the host school twice along with a pair of games against North Dakota State and a single contest against Cal State Northridge.
The competition won't get any easier for Utah as it enters a five-game, three-day affair at the San Diego Classic. The Utes open the tournament by facing UCLA, a Women's College World Series participant last year, on Feb. 27. Utah wraps up the tournament against UC Davis, and San Diego, Feb. 28, before facing host San Diego State, a team ranked 19th at the end of the last regular season, on Mar. 1.
Utah then travels to College Station, Texas, for the Texas A&M Tournament, March 6-8. The Aggies finished last regular season fifth in the rankings and finished second in the nation at the Women's College World Series. The Utes will also face Stephen F. Austin twice as well as a single game against Kent State.
Hawaii, who finished 23rd in the final poll of last year's regular season, hosts the Spring Fling Tournament, March 11-14. Utah starts the tournament against Memphis, then takes on the host Rainbows, to end the opening day. Matchups against Radford, St. John's, Wisconsin, and last season's 25th-ranked team at the end of the regular season, California, await the Utes the following two days to wrap up the early-season-tournament action.
"I still have a lot to learn about my team but we have put together a very competitive schedule this year," Hogue said. "Like always, our early-season tournaments are extremely challenging. There is hardly a weekend on our early-season schedule that I don't expect to see ranked opponents."
Utah opens up home field action at Ute Softball Park by entertaining Boise State in a doubleheader on March 18. The Utes then host in-state rivals for the next three contests, a doubleheader against Utah Valley on March 24 and a single game against Utah State on March 25.
One game at New Mexico takes the lid off the MWC slate on April 2, while a single game at Utah Valley (April 21) followed by a doubleheader versus Southern Utah on April 22 splits conference action.
