Utah Women's Tennis Completes Day One Of Virginia Invitational

CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va.- The No. 50-ranked University of Utah women's tennis team opened its spring season with a pair of doubles wins Saturday at the Virginia Invitational in Charlottesville, Va. The Utes faced off against No. 18-ranked University of North Carolina, while Arkansas (14) and Virginia (41) faced off as well.
"We ran into a team ranked in the top 20 in the country today, and we are not ready to beat a team like that yet," said head coach Mat Iandolo. "We gained a lot of experience and learned some positive things. We are looking forward to the rest of this weekend's play and hope to improve our results tomorrow."
The doubles team of Erin Monson and Andrea Maughan defeated UNC's Haley Hemm and Austin Smith, 8-5. The second win came when Lexi Provancha and Karine Bourdages topped Linzee Mabrey and Hanes Harris, 8-3.
Lisa Johnson and Anastasia Putilina fell to 15th-ranked doubles team of Sanaz Marand and Sophie Grabinski, 8-4. Evgenia Kryuchkova and Leigh Walsh were unable to come up with a win against Meg Fanjoy and Laura Reichert, losing 8-2.
Despite having a few close matches, the Utes were unable to come up with a singles victory on the first day.
The second day of the invitational will begin at 10 a.m. ET Sunday.
