Utah Women's Tennis Drops Close Match to New Mexico

FORT WORTH, Texas- The 49th-ranked Utah women's tennis team (9-8, 3-2 MWC) fell to New Mexico (6-12, 1-3 MWC) , 4-3, Saturday at the Bayard H. Friedman Tennis Center.

"As a program we need to learn how to play as the favorites," said head coach Mat Iandolo. " We came out playing timid and scared, which hurt us in a very big match."

Sophomore Evgenia Kryuchkova and Senior Leigh Walsh at the No. 3 spot downed Maria Sotirchos and Eliane Bourdages, 8-2. Juniors Erin Monson and Andrea Maughan fell at the No. 1 position to Ola Abou-Zekry and Emma Hayman, 8-2.

Freshmen Anastasia Putilina and Lisa Johnson defeated Ashley Bonner and Anya Villanueva-Forte at the No. 2 spot, 8-6, to clinch the doubles point for the Utes.

In singles play Putilina fell to Abou-Zekry at the No. 1 position, 6-3, 6-0 and Monson was topped at the No. 2 spot by Mackenzie White, 6-1, 6-3, putting New Mexico up 2-1.

Walsh defeated Bonner at the No. 4 position, 6-3, 7-5, evening out the score 2-2. Freshman Lexi Provancha at the No. 6 spot fell to Sotirchos, 6-3, 7-5, to put the Lobos up 3-2.

Kryuchkova downed Villanueva-Forte at the No. 5 position, 7-5, 7-5, evening the score between the Utes and the Lobos to 3-3.

Johnson fell at the No. 3 spot after duking it out with Hayman in a three match set, 6-4, 6-7, 6-1, making the final score 4-3 in favor of New Mexico

The Utes' next action will be Wednesday, April 8, at Denver.
