MIDWAY, Utah - Freshman Miles Havlick earned the first podium finish of his career in the first day of cross country skiing action at the Utah Invitational, held at Solder Hollow.
Havlick finished the men's 10-km classic in 34:17.6. He was one of five Utah skiers in the top 15 on the day. Rolf Figi was also in the top 10 with a sixth-place run in 34:32.4. Martin Liljemark, who only joined the Utes three weeks ago, was 12th with a time of 35:20.0, followed by Ben Fick (13th, 35:36.4), and Didrik Smith (14th, 35:47.7).
Ian Havlick (36:22.1) and Tom Smith (36:28.9) rounded out the Utah skiers with finishes of 18th and 19th, respectively.
On the women's side, Zoe Roy had her second top-10 finish of the season with a sixth-place run in the 5-km classic race. She finished in 19:31.6. Sarah MacCarthy placed 12th with a time of 19:58.1 and Marta Larsen was 17th in 21:03.9 to round out the Utah scorers.
Karina Smith (21:26.4) finished in 20th followed by Devon Spika (21:40.4) and Rose Kemp (22:02.0) in 21st and 23rd, respectively. Maddie Talkington was 31st in 24:35.3.
"That was one of the toughest race days I have ever seen," Director of Skiing Eli Brown said. "The first challenge was just to get to the venue. The roads were really bad. There were a lot of cars off the road. Race conditions were in warm, hard snow with 30-mph winds. Waxing was tough, but I am confident that we did the best we could. It was great to have Wendy Wagner, our volunteer coach, on the test skis. She knows weather and is one of the best classic skiers around, so that helped. I told the team that it was going to be tough out there - but it was tough for everyone racing, and to make the best of it. Everyone tried hard, and we had some good results and some not so good results.
"I am especially happy with the way Miles is skiing. For an American freshman to get a podium is truly amazing! It's also another breakthrough for Rolf who had his best result last weekend and this was another big step up. Zoe is skiing strong right now. I am looking forward to seeing everyone ski head-to-head tomorrow. It should be a great battle. "
The Utes dropped to fourth in the overall standings with 575 points. New Mexico leads the team scores with 658 points, followed by Denver (638) and Colorado (583).
Racing resumes tomorrow with the freestyle races, beginning with the 15-km women's race at 9:00 a.m., followed by the men's 20-km race at 10:15 a.m. Races are held at the Olympic course, and parking and admission is free.
