SALT LAKE CITY - Utah junior wing Will Clyburn posted his first career double-double with 21 points and 10 rebounds but the University of Utah men's basketball team was defeated by Oral Roberts (2-3), 78-70, in a non-conference game Saturday at the Jon M. Huntsman Center.
Utah (3-2) out-rebounded Oral Roberts, 34-33, but was at a 51.8% (29-of-56) to 43.4% (23-of-53) disadvantage in shooting.
Both Clyburn and Josh Watkins reached double-figures in points for the fifth consecutive game.
Clyburn poured in a game-high 21 points on a 6-of-12 (50%) night from the floor and also collected a game-high 10 rebounds for his first career double-double and the first for the Utes this season. Clyburn has led Utah in scoring in his first five games at Utah and has reached the 20-point mark for the third time this season. The Detroit, Mich., native was a perfect 6-for-6 from the foul line against the Golden Eagles.
Watkins scored 18 points, including an 8-of-11 effort from the free throw line. He set a career high with four steals and also tied for the team high with three assists.
Jason Washburn was an efficient 4-of-5 (80%) from the field while chipping in 10 points and also collected five rebounds.
Chris Kupets established a career high with seven points after shooting 3-for-6 (50%) from the floor. Kupets also dished out three assists, tying Watkins for team-high honors.
Shawn Glover turned in seven points and also pulled down five rebounds.
Junior center David Foster had three more blocks in the contest and now owns 135 over his career for third place in school history. He is now 23 away from breaking Mitch Smith's (1985-89) second-place mark of 157.
ORU used a 9-2 spurt to assume a 12-6 lead early in the contest as Utah started 1-of-7 from the field. The Golden Eagles led by 16 points, 34-18, after an 11-3 stretch for ORU. Utah closed the half with a 9-0 run over the final 2:01 of the first half, starting with a 3-pointer from Clyburn, a lay-in and two free throws by Watkins and a last-second tip-in by Antonio DiMaria. The Utes were 10-of-12 from the free throw line (83.3%), compared to 2-of-3 (66.7%) for the Golden Eagles. Utah was able to outrebound ORU in the opening half, 18-14. Watkins ended the half shooting 3-for-6 (50%) in the half for a team-high 11 points. Clyburn was 3-of-5 from the floor in the half for nine points. He also collected four rebounds.
Utah cut its seven-point halftime deficit to one point, 46-45, by going on a quick 9-2 run as the Utes hit seven of their first 11 shots, including a 3-of-5 mark from 3-point range, in the second half. A 3-pointer by Glover capped a 5-0 run that allowed the Utes to tie the game for the first time at 50 points apiece then a jumper from the elbow by Kupets gave the Utes a 52-50 edge. ORU quickly took back a five-point lead (57-52) with seven consecutive points. The Utes managed to get within two points (64-62) but the Golden Eagles put together a 5-0 run over the next 1:35 to secure a 69-63 lead before holding on for the 78-70 win. The Utes improved their shooting percentage to 46.9% (15-of-32) but yielded a 57.7% mark (15-of-26) to the Golden Eagles.
Oral Roberts was led by a 20-point night from Warren Niles. Damen Bell-Holter (18 points), Dominique Morrison (17 points) and Steven Roundtree (13 points) all surpassed the 10-point mark for the Golden Eagles.
The Utes host Fresno State on Tuesday. Tip-off between the Utes and Bulldogs is set for 7 p.m.
