SALT LAKE CITY - Will Clyburn and Josh Watkins both surpassed the 20-point mark to lead the University of Utah men's basketball team to an 84-74 win over Adams State Friday in a preseason exhibition game at the Jon M. Huntsman Center.
Clyburn, a Detroit, Mich., native, scored a game-high 28 points on 10-16 shooting from the field. He also collected a game-high 11 rebounds in 34 minutes of play. Clyburn started strong by scoring 13 of Utah's first 15 points in his first seven minutes of action as a Ute. He went 6-for-7 from the field during that stretch and also collected three rebounds.
Utah junior guard Josh Watkins was the second Ute to surpass the 20-point mark. He poured in 22 points, which included a 10-of-13 night from the free throw line and 6-of-13 from the field.
Joining Clyburn and Watkins in double-figures was sophomore center Jason Washburn, scoring 15 points on an efficient 6-of-11 from the field, to go along with seven rebounds. He led Utah's second-half charge with 13 points on 5-for-8 shooting.
The Runnin' Utes were able to hold the Grizzlies to 39.3% shooting in the first half (11-28), but Utah only went for 38.9% (14-of-36). Utah forced nine ASC turnovers in the opening half while committing six. Both teams found difficulty from beyond the arc with Utah shooting 1-of-8 and Adams State going 1-of-7 from 3-point range. Clyburn was 8-of-12 from the floor for 18 points while Watkins scored eight. Utah found itself behind 27-25 before closing with a 13-7 spurt to earn a 38-34 halftime lead.
The Grizzlies outscored the Utes 11-6 to start the second half to grab a 45-44 lead. ASC was ahead 50-49 before Utah scored 11 unanswered points, including consecutive put-backs by Washburn, to take a commanding 60-50 lead. The Ute defense held the Grizzlies without a field goal for over three minutes during the run and Utah would never trail for the remaining 9:42.
The Utes shot 50% from the field in the second half (14-of-28) while holding ASC to a 41.7% clip. Utah shot 43.8% (28-of-64) for the game compared to 40.6% for Adams State (26-of-64). After leading the Mountain West Conference in 3-point field goal defense last season (30.2%), Utah held Adams State to a 28.6% mark from three-point territory. Adams State, an NCAA Division II member, had four players in double-figure points. Marqus Richards and Jason West, Jr., both scored 12 apiece while Rayland Robinson, Jr., turned in 11 and Shayar Lee accounted for 10.
Utah's official season opener will be Friday, Nov. 12 against Grand Canyon University. Tip-off is set for 7 p.m. MT at the Huntsman Center.
