SALT LAKE CITY - Utah junior wing Will Clyburn poured in a game-high 14 points and grabbed eight rebounds as the University of Utah men's basketball team won its season-opener over Grand Canyon, 72-48, Friday at the Jon M. Huntsman Center.
Utah (1-0) went for a 46.9% from the field (30-for-64) and held Grand Canyon to a .291 mark (16-for-55). The Utes outrebounded the Antelopes, 52-26, and shot 46.7% (7-for-15) from beyond the arc.
Clyburn shot 6-for-10 from the floor for 14 points to go with eight rebounds during his Ute debut. The Detroit, Mich., native was 2-for-4 from 3-point territory.
Jason Washburn scored 12 points on a 5-for-8 performance from the floor. He also pulled down five rebounds and blocked three shots.
David Foster had five blocks against GCU and now has 125 over his career. He passed Michael Doleac (124) into fourth-place in the school's career record book and is now one short of tying Keith Van Horn, who holds third place in school history with 126 career blocks. Foster has now blocked a shot in 29 of his last 30 games, including multiple-block efforts in 25 of those contests. Offensively, Foster was 2-for-3 for four points and he also grabbed three boards.
Josh Watkins dished out a team-high six assists and shot 5-for-11 from the field for 11 points. Chris Hines was 3-for-4 from 3-point territory, and 4-for-6 from the floor overall, to register 11 points.
Shawn Glover grabbed a career high eight rebounds and came up just one point shy of his career high with nine points.
There were four ties early in the first half before Utah took control of the game with a 24-2 run over 7:49 of play to take a 36-14 advantage, which coincided with a nine-minute drought for GCU. The Utes shot 45.2% (14-for-31) in the half, compared to a 25.0% mark (7-for-28) for the Antelopes. Utah also outrebounded GCU in the half, 27-13, while also holding a 6-3 edge in team blocks. Clyburn hit his first three shots of the game and ended the half 4-for-5 (80.0%) from the floor for a team-high nine points. Clyburn and J.J. O'Brien both grabbed six boards in the half and Utah shot 60.0% (3-for-5) from 3-point range with three different players each making one from long distance.
Grand Canyon scored six of the first eight points to start the second half but the Utes pushed back with a 16-2 run over the next 5:57 of action to take a 28-point lead at 54-26, its largest lead of the game before going on to the 72-48 victory.
Grand Canyon (0-1) was led by 11 points from Nick Witherill. Barret Robbins and Justin Wesolowski grabbed six rebounds apiece.
The Utes host Big Sky Conference opponent Montana Wednesday at 7 p.m., in the Huntsman Center.
