SALT LAKE CITY - The Utah ski team enters the final portion of its season with the Rocky Mountain Intercollegiate Ski Association Championship and NCAA West Regional meet, hosted by the University of Colorado and held in Steamboat Springs.
Colorado will also host the NCAA Championships in two weeks. The Utes will be looking to gain experience on the NCAA courses this coming weekend while solidifying their NCAA qualifiers.
Action begins on Friday, Feb. 26, with the cross country classic and alpine giant slalom races. Saturday begins with the freestyle races in the morning while the slalom races will be held at night. The Nordic races will be held at the Steamboat Nordic Center with the alpine races going on at Howelsen Hill and Mount Werner.
Eva Huckova leads all Utah skiers and currently stands second in both the slalom and giant slalom women's NCAA qualifying standings. She has two wins (one slalom, one GS) on the year and has not finished below eighth place. Anna Kocken was buoyed in the slalom standings with two top-10 finishes in last weekend's meet. Sofia Smith is having her best season ever, with a pair of top-10 runs in the giant slalom.
Men's alpine has been Utah's strongest group this year, although their depth has suffered due to injuries. Torjus Krogdahl has five top-six slalom finishes this year, including a pair of runner-up finishes. Kyle Kung and Thomas Zumbrunn are in the top-10 of the giant slalom standings. Max Lamb and Nick Cohee also have had some strong finishes this year.
The men's Nordic team is led by Martin Liljemark, who had a pair of top-six runs last weekend to jump in the standings. Miles Havlick, Didrik Smith and Rolf Figi are also in NCAA qualifying position and will be looking to boost their seeding. Havlick has a pair of top-five runs while Smith has three top-10 finishes, including two last weekend. Figi also as finished in the top 10 twice.
Zoe Roy, who has four top-10 finishes for the women's Nordic team, is solidly in the NCAA meet. Rose Kemp, Devon Spika, Marta Larsen and Sarah MacCarthy are all on the bubble of NCAA qualifying but any one of the four can jump into position with a solid finish this weekend. MacCarthy had the best finish of the four during the season, a ninth-place run in the season opening meet at Montana State.
Utah has finished fourth in all four meets it has competed in this year.
"All season we have had great moments but we have also been inconsistent," Director of Skiing Eli Brown said. "Now is when we want to peak and when we put it all together we are going to surprise some people."
