TAOS, New Mexico - The alpine team led Utah on the first day of the New Mexico Invitational with four top-10 finishes between the men's and the women's teams on Friday.
Kyle Kung picked up his first podium finish of the season with a third-place run in the giant slalom. Thomas Zumbrunn was fifth and Max Lamb rounded out the scorers with an 11th-place finish. Nick Cohee placed 14th while Torjus Krogdahl (20th) and Tague Thorson (25th) also skied for Utah.
On the women's side, Sofia Smith had the best finish of her Utah career with a fifth-place run in the giant slalom. Eva Huckova was eighth and Anna Kocken placed 14th to round out a solid day for the Utes. Julia Wong also finished 23rd.
"I am really excited about Sofia, since she worked so hard in the offseason," Director of Skiing Eli Brown said. "She is really due this finish."
The Nordic skiers were shorthanded with several staying back in Utah to train and regroup. Rolf Figi led all skiers with a 12th-place finish in the men's 10-km classic, with Ben Fick (15th) and Tom Smith (25th) also racing for Utah. For the women, Rose Kemp had a solid day with a 14th-place run in the 5-km race, followed by Devon Spika (15th) and Karina Smith (18th).
Utah is fourth after the first day, just a point out of third-place. New Mexico leads the meet with 470 points, while Colorado is in second (428) and Montana State in third (363) followed by the Utes in fourth (362).
"We had a solid day as a team," Brown said. "We are almost halfway to the NCAA Championships. Now more than ever our talent needs to come out and we will start skiing more consistently and strong, building up to giving our best in March."
Utah continues at the New Mexico Invitational on Saturday with the slalom alpine races and freestyle Nordic races.
