NORTHRIDGE, Calif. - The University of Utah softball team was defeated in a pair of games Thursday afternoon at Matador Diamond.
Cal State Northridge 6 def. Utah 1
The Utes fell behind by six runs after the first four innings in a 6-1 loss in game one.
Sophomore left-fielder Hannah Clements connected on her first home run of the season in the fifth inning to tally Utah's lone run of the game.Joni Cook suffered the loss for Utah, going six innings with two walks as her record dipped to 0-5.
Cal State Northridge 8, Utah 2
Utah jumped out ahead with a score in the first inning but the Utes fell victim to a five-run Cal State Northridge rally in the third inning to defeat the Utes in the second game, 8-2.
Five different Utes collected hits: Kelsi Hoopiiaina, Kara Foster, Hannah Clements, Jasey Jensen and Tori Medina.
Brooke Olson led off the game for Utah by drawing a walk and would eventually scored after the CSUN pitcher issued three two-out walks.
Hoopiiaina and Foster connected on back-to-back doubles that allowed Hoopiiana to score Utah's second run of the contest in the fifth inning.
Ashley Smuda took the loss in game two after working 4.2 innings and allowing 10 hits and seven earned runs. She had three strikeouts but issued four walks as her record slid to 10-7 this season.
Utah comes back home to Ute Softball Field on March 30 for a doubleheader with Southern Utah. First pitch against the Thunderbirds is set for 2 p.m.
