OGDEN, Utah - Senior outfielder Tori Media went 3-for-3 at the plate and drove in four runs to lead the University of Utah softball team to a 2-1 victory in eight innings and a 10-4 win during a doubleheader Friday at Wildcat Softball Field.
Utah (16-17) hit .318 on the day compared to a .262 mark for Weber State.
Medina hit her first home of the season in the bottom of the seventh inning in the second game, a three-run shot that capped Utah's 10-4 victory.
Kara Foster was 4-for-8 with three runs driven in with two doubles and one home run. Foster knocked her 58th career home run, the team-high fifth of the season, to lead off the second inning.
Joni Cook and Ashley Smuda both recorded wins and combined for a 2.33 ERA on the day. Smuda pitched nine innings, allowing three earned runs on nine hits. Cook allowed two earned runs and seven hits in six innings.
Game 1: Utah def. Weber State, 2-1
Brooke Olson was 2-for-4 at the plate with a run batted in to lead the Ute offense. Five other Utes had one hit apiece with Kelsi Hoopiiaina driving in Utah's lone run of the contest.
A solo home run by Weber State's Brittany Hardine to lead off its first inning gave Weber State its only lead of the day, 1-0.
The Utah offense awoke in the fifth inning when Sandi Bowles tripled to left and was driven in by an RBI double by Olson.
Utah wasted no time in its first extra-inning contest of the season by pushing across the game-winning run in the top of the eighth inning when Hoopiiaina ripped her first home run of the season over the left-center field fence to give Utah the 2-1 win.
Smuda improved to 13-7 this season after going 6.2 innings, allowing one earned run on five hits with nine strikeouts. Cook finished the last 1.1 innings of the win, allowing two hits.
Game 2: Utah def. Weber State, 10-4
In addition to Medina's 3-for-3 game in game two, Foster came through with a 3-for-4 performance with three RBI and three runs scored.
Utah's offense grasped control of the game in the second inning when Foster homered to right-center field for her 58th career home run and the fifth of her career. The Utes exploded for three runs in the fourth inning as Hoopiiaina reached after being hit by a pitch then Foster doubled to left-center field to drive her in. Medina then drove a single up the middle of the Wildcat defense to score Foster. Medina then added the third run of the frame when Lindsey Palmer hit another single through the middle of the WSU defense.
Weber State came back with four runs in the fourth, fifth and sixth innings, but fortunately Utah was able to score six runs in its final three at-bats. Olson started the fifth inning with a single then stole second base and scored as Foster singled up the middle. Medina began the sixth inning with a double then reached third after a wild pitch. Medina scored after Haylee Hoch drove a double to left field. Hoch tallied the second run of the inning after she stole third base and took home plate after a throwing error by the Wildcat catcher.
The Utes tacked on three runs in the seventh inning when Medina got a hold of her first home run of the season over the left-field fence.
Up next for the Utes is a doubleheader at Boise State on Tuesday. First pitch from Mountain Cove Softball Field is slated for 1 p.m.
