COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. - Utah senior right-hander Ashley Smuda was named the Mountain West Conference Softball Pitcher of the Week, the conference office announced Tuesday. It was her first award of the season and the fourth of her career
Smuda, a Scottsdale, Ariz., native, went 2-1 in three appearances with a pair of complete games last week. In 16.1 innings in the circle, Smuda struck out 13 while allowing eight earned runs, four walks and 20 hits.
Smuda went the distance in Utah's 6-2 win over Utah Valley, giving up eight hits and two earned runs while striking out six.
Smuda followed with another complete game victory in Utah's 3-2 win over San Diego State. She held the Aztecs scoreless for six innings before allowing two runs in the seventh inning. Smuda struck out six and issued no walks, while scattering seven hits.
Three Utes have won weekly awards from the conference this season.
The Utes continue their MWC schedule Thursday against New Mexico. First pitch is scheduled for 4 p.m.
