SAN DIEGO - Joni Cook went 2-for-3 with a run scored and also started in the pitching circle but the University of Utah softball team lost 6-1 to San Diego State Friday in a Mountain West Conference game at San Diego State Softball Stadium.
Utah (24-27, 4-9 MWC) was led by Cook, who led off the second inning with a double then led off again in the fourth inning with a single to center field.
Whitney Holm collected a hit in the game, an RBI double in the second inning to account for the Utes' only run. Senior first baseman Lindsey Palmer went 1-for-3 as well.
After giving up two first-inning runs, Cook settled in nicely in the circle for the Utes, keeping the Aztecs scoreless for the next four innings. Cook got out of a jam in the fourth inning when SDSU put runners on second and third base with no out before she got Monica Alnes to line to Palmer for a double play then closed the frame by striking out Patrice Jackson.
For the game, Cook went 5.0 innings and allowed four earned runs on six hits with no walks and three strikeouts. Unfortunately, Cook was the hard-luck loser in the decision and dropped to 2-6 this season. Smuda came on to pitch the sixth, allowing two hits with one strikeout.
SDSU picked up two runs in the first inning, beginning when Felicia Reifschneider reached on a Ute throwing error then Jessica Camello singled over shortstop Kelsi Hoopiiaina. A single to left field by Kristin May scored both runs and gave the Aztecs a 2-0 lead.
Utah cut its deficit in half with back-to-back doubles to start the second inning. Cook led off the frame by hitting the first pitch she saw to right-center field for a two-base hit. Holm then doubled to center field to drive Cook in for Utah's only run of the game as well as her 26th RBI of the season.
The Utes have hit a school-record 77 doubles this season, besting the previous school-best mark of 75 set in 2008.
The Aztecs tacked on four additional runs in the sixth inning as Camello doubled to left-center field then Brittany Knudsen singled to center field to put SDSU runners at second and third base. Camello scored the Aztecs' third run of the game on a passed ball. Knudsen was knocked in after an RBI single by Justeen Maeva. May then hit a two-run homer over the left-field fence to give the Aztecs a 6-1 advantage.
San Diego State (30-13, 8-3 MWC) had Samantha Beasley start in the circle, going six innings and allowing one earned run on three hits with nine strikeouts to earn the win. Bailey Micetich came on for the seventh inning.
The Utes finish their two-game set at San Diego State tomorrow at 1 p.m. PT. Live stats for both games can be found at goaztecs.com.
