SALT LAKE CITY - The University of Utah ski team continues its season this weekend at the Montana State Invitational on Saturday and Sunday in Big Sky and Bozeman, Mont. MSU will host a Rocky Mountain Intercollegiate Skiing Association giant slalom qualifying race on Friday. All three days of alpine action will begin at 9:45 a.m. Saturday's nordic freestyle races will start at 9 a.m., and Sunday's classic races will begin at 9:30 a.m.
The Utes are currently second after the alpine events of the Utah Invitational, which were held last Saturday and Sunday at the Park City Mountain Resort. Eva Huckova won the women's giant slalom for the second consecutive season while Jeremy Elliott earned a podium finish in third place on the men's side. Torjus Krogdahl posted a fourth-place finish in the men's slalom as Huckova and Anna Kocken tied for fifth in the women's slalom. Tii-Maria Romar was right behind them in seventh place in her first slalom race as a Ute.
The Utah nordic team will open its season this weekend in 10- and 15-km classic races. The Ute women are led by a pair of three-time NCAA qualifiers, Sarah MacCarthy and Zoe Roy. MacCarthy and Roy will team with Rose Kemp, who was an NCAA qualifier in both the 5-km and 15-km freestyle last season, to form the focal point of Utah's women's nordic events. Parker Tyler, Madeleine Talkington, Maria Grafnings, Marta Larsen, and Mali Noyes will also compete in nordic events for the Utes.
Miles Havlick leads the Ute lineup in the men's nordic events. He qualified for two events in the NCAA Championships as a freshman in 2010, earning All-America honors in the 10-km classic with an eighth-place finish and also finishing 22nd in the 20-km freestyle. Last season, Rolf Figi qualified for the national meet and was an alternate due to team limits. Team captain Ian Havlick returns after competing in six races, as will two-time NCAA qualifier Didrick Smith, who finished 12th in the 20-km freestyle and placed 17th in the 10-km classic at last season's national meet. Junior Tom Smith registered six top-25 finishes, while Bend, Ore., native Charlie Smith looks to make an immediate impact.
Thoughts from Director of Skiing Kevin Sweeney
On Saturday's Utah Invitational giant slalom race:
"It was a great opener for us today. I was more than happy with the results and with the potential this squad demonstrated. It was hard, gutsy skiing out there and I was especially excited about the runs put down by our newcomers as well as the continued leadership demonstrated by our veterans. That was exciting for us and I think we also grew leaps and bounds as a team."
On Sunday's Utah Invitational slalom race:
"It was an excellent display of team skiing. I am very happy with the team score we put up for both men and women as well as for the overall weekend. We opened the season as I had hoped with excellent individual NCAA qualifying points as well a confidence-building team score. It was a fun day on the hill for the Skiin' Utes."
