Utah Jazzed: Sweden's Maria Graefnings scores and scores again for the Utes (by Bryce Hubner of Ski Racing Magazine) ![]()
After enjoying a week off from competition last weekend, the University of Utah skiing team will resume its season at the New Mexico Invitational on Friday and Saturday. The nordic and alpine events will be held at Red River. Action begins on Friday with the nordic classical races and the alpine slalom races. Races continue on Saturday with the freestyle and a second slalom race.
Utah has finished second in both of the meets it has competed in this season.
In the nordic races, senior Maria Graefnings will put her season-opening four-race win streak on the line. In the Utah Invitational 15k classical race at Soldier Hollow, Graefnings took first place with a 54:38.0 performance, which was 2:42.5 ahead of the runner-up finisher and won the 5k freestyle event with a time of 14:10.4, which was 11 seconds ahead of the second-place finisher. To start the 2011 season, Graefnings won both events during her Ute debut at the Montana State Invitational, posting a time of 48:23.3 in the 15k classical and 13:09.1 in the 10k freestyle. She was named the Rocky Mountain Intercollegiate Skiing Association Women's Nordic Skier of Week after her performance.
Sophomore Miles Havlick has had an impressive start to the season as well on the men's side for the Ute nordic skiers. At the U. of U. Invite, Havlick took his first 10k freestyle victory after turning in a time of 26:21.0, which was 1:09.0 faster than the second-place finisher then took sixth place in the 20k classical race at 1:05.10.0. At the beginning of the season, Havlick was named the RMISA Men's Nordic Skier of the Week after winning the men's 20k classical race at the Montana State Invitational with a time of 58:37.4 and had a podium performance as the runner-up in the 10k freestyle at a time of 24:25.6.
Utah's alpine skiers return to action this week after a two-week layoff. Sophomore Ryan Wilson has turned in two giant slalom victories already this season, at the RMISA Qualifier in Bozeman, Mont., as well as at the MSU Invitational. Jeremy Elliot has also had a podium finish, a third-place effort in the giant slalom at the Utah Invitational.
Eva Huckova has posted first and second-place finishes this year with a giant slalom victory at the Utah Invitational as well as a runner-up effort in the slalom at the Montana State Invitational. Tii-Maria Romar has also registered a victory in the giant slalom this season after posting a time of 1:57.75.
The Utes finished fourth at last year's New Mexico Invitational on Friday. Huckova took a second-place finish in the slalom, while Kyle Kung joined her on the podium with a third-place effort in the giant slalom.
