Utah Head Coach Kyle Whittingham
Opening statement:
"Unfortunately, this was very similar to last week in a lot of ways. In the second half, we were down 10-7 and did some good things then took the lead 14-10. Then the wheels came off and we started to turn the ball over. We'll start winning games when we stop turning the ball over. That's the bottom line. Until that happens, it's going to be a long road so that's our biggest issue right now. The defense hung in there very well as long as they could, but whatever spot you're put in as a defense, you have to try to rally up and make a stop. We just have to figure out a way to win our next game, but things won't get any easier next week as we go to Pittsburgh."
On the defense:
"We played the run pretty tough throughout the second half, That was the problem last week. We played really well against the run in the first half then were very porous in the second half. [Arizona State] only ran for 74 yards on us. That will put you in the top 10 in the nation if you're going to do that every week. We have to do more than just stop the run, though."
On Utah quarterback Jon Hayes:
"He did some good things, especially for a first-time starter against a pretty athletic defense. But we have to take care of the football, we had some interceptions that really hurt us and we turned the ball over in the red zone again. He's a tough and competitive kid. He has a strong arm and has some attributes that are positive. But we can't win any games with five turnovers."
On the second half:
"I was very surprised [with how the second half played out.] We came out with some resolve and scored on that first drive then when you start turning the ball over, most games will get away from you."
Utah quarterback Jon Hays
On his performance:
"I played okay, beside the turnovers. The offense goes as I go and when I turn the ball over three times, it's not going to help. That pick at the end of the first half took three points off the board. I put the defense in a terrible spot. That could have been a 14-point swing. You never know what could have happened on that drive. I'm just disappointed in how I played."
On moving on from the loss:
"We're going to be okay. We just have to look at it as a new season and we're just going to try to win the rest of our games. I've learned that every play matters and everything you do matters, on the field and off the field. I have to take that to heart and come in to work on Monday."
Utah wide receiver Reggie Dunn
On the team's reaction to the loss:
"We are still confident in one another. We're just going to continue to play hard the rest of the season. We're going to come in on Monday and watch the film then get ready to work and to play at Pitt. We're down because we lost, but we have to come back strong the next week. Obviously, we know we can play with these guys. You've seen that over the last couple of week against USC, Washington and Arizona State."
Arizona State Head Coach Dennis Erickson
Was getting a win on the road against a good team the last mental hurdle for this team?
"I don't know. We've got a lot of mental hurdles ahead of us. Unfortunately, that's just how football is. We've got, what, six games left? But it was nice to come on the road and get a win."
On Utah's performance
"We knew we were going to get everything from them. They're a good football program, they're very physical and they're very tough. Obviously, their quarterback was hurt, but they gave it to us early and we fought back. They took that drive in the second half and gambled a little bit on the fake punt, but then we came back and answered and started getting those turnovers."
On getting five Utah turnovers
"We've been getting turnovers the last three or four games, and that's what it's all about. You look every year at the stats and the best teams are ahead in the turnover margin. That's what happened today. They had five and we didn't have any. Usually you win football games like that."
On his team getting more turnovers in recent weeks
"You practice the same way. It's a matter of emphasis, there's no question about that. But, we've had some interceptions and our secondary is playing better all the time, and that makes a big difference. And, we're stripping the ball. Obviously, those three turnovers in the third quarter changed the game, and on offense we were able to get points out of it."
