The Utah ski team will play host to the NCAA West Region/Rocky Mountain Intercollegiate Ski Association Championships Friday and Saturday with alpine events at Park City Mountain Resort and nordic races held at Soldier Hollow Resort. Action begins on Friday with the cross country freestyle at 9 a.m., while the men's giant slalom and women's slalom races start at 9:30 a.m. Saturday begins with the nordic classical races at 9 a.m., while the women's giant slalom and men's slalom races will start at 9:30 a.m.
The University of Vermont will host the NCAA Championships in two weeks and the Utes will look to solidify NCAA qualifiers in the meet.
Ute skiers are atop the NCAA qualifying standings in both men's and women's nordic categories. Maria Graefnings has placed first in seven of eight events in 2011, while Miles Havlick has won three races this year and has only finished outside the top two on one occasion. Zoe Roy and Didrik Smith are both fourth in the nordic standings as Roy has not finished below sixth place this season and Smith won the last race he competed in, the 10k freestyle at the New Mexico Invitational.
Utah's presence in the slalom qualifying standings is led by Tii-Maria Romar and Eva Huckova. Romar is first in the giant slalom rankings and tied for third in slalom. Huckova is in a second-place tie in the giant slalom standings and is running in a third-place tie with Romar in the slalom.
In the men's slalom NCAA qualifying rankings, Ryan Wilson is tied for first in the giant slalom after a pair of victories in the RMISA Qualifier and the Montana State Invitational. Jeremy Elliot takes third place and Nick Cohee rounds out the top 10. Torjus Krogdahl is currently in a second-place tie on the men's slalom leaderboard after winning the Denver Invitational and he also earned a podium finish in the second run of the New Mexico Invitational.
Utah has finished second in all four meets it has competed in this year, including the season-opening Utah Invitational, which was held at Park City and Soldier Hollow as well.
