COLLEGE PARK, Md. - Senior designated player Brittany Parker was a perfect 3-for-3 on the day but the University of Utah softball team lost to Princeton, 1-0, Sunday in the final game of the University of Maryland's Round Robin at Robert E. Taylor Field.
Utah (12-15) went 2-2 at this weekend's tournament and received another stellar pitching effort from freshman Naomi Amu. Amu threw her third complete game this season, going all 7.0 innings and allowed one earned run on four hits with three strikeouts and only one walk. With the hard-luck loss, Amu is now 3-5 this season.
Parker had all three of Utah's hits in the contest, including three singles.
Princeton had a runner on third base with one out in the first inning, but Utah kept the game scoreless after the Tigers' runner was thrown out on a fielder's choice then the third came after a lineout to Kelsi Hoopiiaina at shortstop.
Utah threatened in its first at-bat when Tara Glover drew a leadoff walk and then stole second base. Tia Palauni drew a one-out walk before Glover and Palauni advanced to second and third base, respectively, after a Princeton passed ball. Unfortunately, a strikeout and pop-up to second base allowed the Tigers to get out of the inning unscathed.
The Utes left two more runners on base in the second inning as Hoopiiaina drew a leadoff walk for the second consecutive inning then Parker slapped a one-out single to left field. A ground ball to first base allowed Utah's runners to advance to second and third base. Unfortunately, the Tigers were able to get a fly-out to close the inning.
Parker led off with a single to left field in the fifth frame then pinch runner Sandi Bowles entered the game and advanced third base but Utah could not get her to home plate.
Parker singled again to right field in the top of the seventh inning then Kayla Ensminger came on as a pinch runner and stole second then advanced to third after a passed ball. Unfortunately, the Tigers were able to close the game on a foul out to first base.
The Utes continue their spring break road trip in the Washington, D.C., area with a doubleheader at George Mason. First pitch from Fairfax, Va., is scheduled for 2 p.m. ET.
