WASHINGTON, D.C. - Junior third baseman Whitney Holm went 2-for-3 and the University of Utah softball team closed its spring break trip with a 4-1 win over Georgetown Wednesday at Guy Mason Field.
Utah (15-15) brought its overall record back to .500 with its seventh victory in its last nine games. The Utes have scored in the first inning and have been the first team to score in its last three games.
Holm hit a pair of singles and was the only Ute with multiple hits in the game. Utah's other hits in the contest went for extra bases as freshman outfielder Tara Glover hit a triple while Katelyn Elliott, Brittany Parker and Cheyella Myers all registered a double apiece.
Generra Nieslon started on the mound for the Utes and worked the first 4.0 innings. She did not allow an earned run on three hits to go with six strikeouts and two walks. As the pitcher of record, she improved to 11-10 this season after picking up the win.
Naomi Amu came on to secure the victory by pitching the final three innings. She only gave up two hits and did not allow an earned run while striking out two Hoya hitters and walking one.
For the second time in as many games, Glover started Utah's first inning with a triple to center field. Chalese Fankhauser wasted no time capitalizing on the scoring chance by lifting a sacrifice fly to left field for the first score of the game.
Utah pieced together a two-out rally in the fourth frame that started with a base hit up the middle by Holm. Kayla Ensminger entered the game as pinch runner and scored as Parker blasted a double to left-center field to put the Utes ahead, 2-0. Sandi Bowles came on to pinch run for Parker and Elliott followed with another double to score Bowles and give Utah a 3-0 lead.
Myers led off Utah's sixth with another double to left-center field and advanced to third base after a groundout by Holm. Myers played the Utes' final run of the game after an error by Georgetown's left fielder.
The Hoyas got on the scored in the bottom of the sixth inning, but the Utes came away with the win and improved to 2-1 against teams from the Big East Conference this season. Utah went 5-2 during its spring break road trip on the east coast.
The Utes are scheduled to open their home slate with a doubleheader next Wednesday, March 30, against Boise State. First pitch from Ute Softball Field is set for 2 p.m. Gavin McCallister will have a live play-by-play call of the action at utahutes.com.
