SALT LAKE CITY - The Utah baseball team played seven innings with Air Force on Sunday, taking a 9-4 lead through seven innings before the game was halted due to travel plans. The contest will be resumed when Utah travels to Colorado Springs the weekend of April 29.
Although Utah had two hits in the first inning, the Utes stranded both runners on base. Air Force got on the board first, scoring four runs on three hits in the second inning for a 4-0 lead. Matthew Roberts drove in two runs with a single while Garrett Custons had a two-RBI double in the game.
Utah scored its first run of the game in the third when Michael Beltran and Shaun Cooper each had hits, as Cooper drove in Beltran with a single after Beltran doubled. The Utes tied the game in the fourth, 4-4, with three runs crossing the plate. Jo Jo Sharrar led off the inning with a double and although Air Force got the next two outs, the inning spiraled out of control when Tyson Gonzalez reached on a throwing error, allowing Sharrar to score. James Brooks and Beltran followed with RBI hits.
The Utes took the lead in the fifth, scoring four runs to double their score and move ahead 8-4. C.J. Cron started things off with a double and Cooper followed with a single. Trey Nielsen reached on an error to score Cron before Tyler Relf hit a two-RBI single. Josh Alexander also had an RBI hit in the inning for Utah.
Utah added an insurance run in the sixth on an RBI single from Nielsen.
Ute starter Ben Mordini, making his first collegiate start, settled down after the second inning and only allowed one hit through the next four innings. Mordini had seven strikeouts and allowed just three walks.
"We still need six outs, but I really liked the way that we played after the long delay," Utah head coach Bill Kinneberg said. "I thought the guys did a fantastic job staying with it. Ben recovered well after the second inning and also did an awesome job."
Utah continues at home on Tuesday, March 29, against Utah Valley beginning at 6:00 p.m.
