LAS VEGAS - Freshman outfielder Tara Glover plated the first of the game but the University of Utah softball team suffered a 9-1 loss to UNLV in six innings Friday night at Eller Media Stadium.
Utah (23-17, 1-1 MWC) had its season-long eight-game win streak snapped and was handed its first Mountain West Conference loss of the year. The Utes have still won 10 of their last 12 outings.
Naomi Amu went 4.1 innings in her start on the mound, allowing five earned runs on eight hits with six strikeouts and two walks. She had her streak of four consecutive victories in pitching decisions snapped and fell to 8-7 on the year. Generra Nielson and Brittany Parker finished the game on the mound for the Utes.
Offensively, three different Utah players collected hits in the game: Brooke Olson, Chalese Fankhauser and Whitney Holm.
Utah continued to be aggressive on the base paths as the team went 4-for-5 on stolen base attempts against the Rebels. Each of the Utes' first four hitters in the lineup also recorded stolen bases, including Glover, who leads the league with 11 stolen bases on 13 attempts this season.
The Utes struck first in the top of the third frame as Glover reached on a fielder's choice then stole second base. A throwing error on ground ball to the Rebel shortstop hit by Fankhauser permitted Glover to come around and score the first run of the contest.
The Rebels quickly countered with a run in the bottom of the same frame starting with a single up the middle then a sacrifice bunt moved UNLV's pinch runner to second base. Unfortunately, the equalizer came as a result of consecutive wild pitches.
UNLV (23-15, 3-2 MWC) was able the seize the lead for the first in its fourth at-bat when it came up with a two-out single with runners on first and second base. The Rebels were able to break the game open by pushing three more runs across the plate in the fifth as Tayler Aleman lined an RBI double down the left-field line then Tayler VanAcker doubled to left-center field to allow two more runs to score. The Rebels tacked on four more runs in the sixth to set the final margin at 9-1.
Utah fell to 18-9 this season when scoring first.
The Utes face the Rebels at Eller Media Stadium again tomorrow afternoon at 1 p.m. PT.
