SALT LAKE CITY- The 53rd-ranked University of Utah women's tennis team's head coach Mat Iandolo has announced the signing of 4-star recruit Maryam Eslami to a National Letter of Intent.
"Maryam is a player with a lot of national level experience and I feel that she is one of the top prospects out of southern California," said Iandolo. "Maryam trained a lot with Sarah Pham and like Sarah, she is an aggressive baseliner with a lot of heart."
Eslami, originally from Simsbury, Conn., joins the Utes from San Marcos, Calif., where she and her family relocated a few years ago. "I chose Utah because I love the fact that everyone on the team is really competitive and supportive," Eslami stated. "Also because the coaches are really nice, as is the team, and the atmosphere is great."
In 2010, Eslami won the Girls 18 (G18) open singles at the 61st Annual San Diego Metropolitan Juniors Tournament, after upsetting top-seeded Megan White in the semifinals. She also reached the finals of the women's open singles at the 82nd San Diego District Championships and the semifinals of the G18 singles at the 26th Annual Los Caballeros Junior Tournament. Eslami won the G18 doubles title, with partner Tory Parravi, at the 2010 Orange County Junior Open (formerly the JP Yamasaki). She also advanced to the final round of the G18 doubles at the 2010 USTA National Open and placed second at the 13th Annual Prince-SCTA Doubles Grand Prix Masters.
Eslami is the Utes' third NLI of the year, joining Danielle Flores and Sammie Watson to form Utah's 2011 signing class.
