SALT LAKE CITY - University of Utah head men's basketball coach Larry Krystkowiak announced the hiring of Tommy Connor as an assistant coach Friday. Connor, a former Utah player (1986-88, 1990) and assistant coach (1994-97), returns to his alma mater after a very successful 12-year stint as the head coach at Westminster College.
"We are extremely excited to add Coach Connor to our staff," said Krystkowiak. "He is an experienced, winning basketball coach and a quality individual. It's also very important for us to have someone on staff who was a player and assistant coach here, who understands and appreciates the tradition and history of Utah basketball. I know Tommy is as passionate as I am about the challenges ahead as we work to restore this program."
Connor was a four-year starter for the Runnin' Utes at point guard. After graduating with a B.S. in Exercise and Sport Science, he spent three years as a Graduate Assistant and another four years as an assistant coach at Utah under Rick Majerus. During his time on the bench, Connor helped guide Utah to the NCAA Sweet Sixteen and Elite Eight as well as the NIT "Final Four", while capturing four Western Athletic Conference championships.
"I am very excited to be back as part of Utah basketball once again," said Connor. "This is a wonderful opportunity that Coach Krystkowiak has given me. I am excited to face the challenges ahead and I look forward to helping Coach K take Utah in this new direction."
Connor just completed his 12th season as head men's basketball coach at Westminster College. Since reinstating the basketball program in 1999-2000, Connor has put up some impressive numbers. The Griffins have gone 264-114 (.698) overall while proving even more dominant in Frontier play with a 126-40 (.759) mark.
Under Connor, Westminster has posted 10 seasons with at least 20 wins, including each of the past nine seasons. The Griffins have won seven regular season Frontier Conference championships and two conference tournament titles. Connor is a five-time Frontier Conference Coach of the Year and his teams qualified for nine NAIA National Championship appearances.
Westminster had 17 players named NAIA All-Americans and one NAIA National Player of the Year under Connor. The Griffins also had five players named Frontier Conference Player of the Year with 36 all-conference performers. Westminster was also successful in the classroom as 44 players earned NAIA Scholar Athlete honors and 108 players were named Academic All-Frontier Conference. In each of the past two years, Westminster led the nation with the most NAIA Scholar Athletes.
Connor has been married to his wife Kathryn for 22 years. He has a son, Jake (14) and two daughters Sydney (12) and Cass (9).
