PROVO, Utah - Senior catcher Brooke Olson hit her 12th career home run in the second game but the University of Utah softball team suffered a pair of losses (3-0, 12-1 in five innings) against Brigham Young University Saturday at Gail Miller Field.
Utah finished its 2011 regular season 29-22 overall and was 7-5 against Mountain West Conference competition.
Aside from a solo home run to center field in the bottom of the fifth inning in game two by Olson, the Ute offense was supplied by three-hit performances on the day from sophomore shortstop Kelsi Hoopiiaina and senior designated player Brittany Parker. Hoopiiaina went 3-for-3 between the two games with one walk, while Parker registered three singles in five at-bats. Freshman right fielder Cheyella Myers smacked a double for Utah and drew a pair of walks.
Game 1: BYU def. Utah, 3-0
The Utes had runners in scoring position in the second and third innings, but unfortunately came away without a run.
Hoopiiaina and Parker hit back-to-back one-out singles in the top of the second, but the Cougars were able to turn a double play to get out of the jam.
Myers led off the third inning with her seventh double of the season on a 2-1 delivery that she sent to right field. Unfortunately, BYU was able to get a strikeout, flyout and pickoff to keep the Utes off the scoreboard.
BYU opened the lid on the scoring with three runs in the third inning to set the final margin at 3-0.
Senior Generra Nielson was pinned the loss after going 2.2 innings and completed her regular season with a 21-12 record. Naomi Amu pitched the remainder of the game for the Utes and did not allow a run in 3.1 innings of work on three hits while striking out five and walking two.
Game 2: BYU def. Utah, 12-1 (5 innings)
Olson connected on her fifth home run of the season, a solo shot over the center-field fence, to lead off the bottom of the fifth. Unfortunately, BYU used nine runs in the fourth and fifth innings to claim the 12-1 win.
All four of Utah's pitchers (Nielson, Parker, Amu and Joni Cook) appeared in the game while the loss in the decision was handed to the starter, Amu. The Oceanside, Calif., native finished her regular season with an 8-9 record.
