The University of Utah softball team finished seven games above .500 with a 29-22 overall record was 7-5 against league foes. The Utes finished in fourth place in their final season of Mountain West Conference play. This was Utah's first winning season since 2008 and its 29 victories were the most in a single season for the program since 2006.
Closing Strong: The Utes saved their best softball for the second half of the season as they have won 14 of their last 20 games. Senior Brittany Parker (Murray, Utah) was one of the top hitters in the MWC, batting a team-high .560 in the last 20 games of her career to go with 14 RBI, seven runs scored and five homers.
Clean-Fielding Utes: Utah was the top fielding team in the MWC with a .980 fielding percentage during conference play in 2011. In the overall statistics, the Utes finished third among conference foes with a .964 mark.
Power Players: Utah hit 19 home runs against MWC opponents this season, a mark that led the league. All five of Parker's home runs this season were hit in conference play. She finished in a second-place tie among the MWC leaders. The Utes were third in the MWC overall statistics with 47 homers hit as a team. Junior third baseman Whitney Holm (Spanish Fork Utah) led the way with a team-high nine round-trippers, which tied for eighth in the league rankings. Fellow corner infielder, junior first baseman Tia Palauni (Taylorsville, Utah), ended in second place on the team with eight home runs.
Upset Utes: Palauni connected on a walk-off three-run home run in the eighth inning to lead Utah to a 3-1 win over then-No. 13/10 Arizona State in the Kajikawa Classic Feb. 12 in front of 1,139 fans at Farrington Stadium in Tempe, Ariz.
The Utes finished 1-2 against Pac-10 opponents in 2011. Arizona State went on to claim the No. 1 overall seed in the NCAA Tournament.
