SALT LAKE CITY - Maria Graefnings of the University of Utah ski team was named the Rocky Mountain Intercollegiate Ski Association Female Skier of the Year and Abi Holt earned the Nordic Coach of the Year award, the RMISA announced Thursday after a vote by the league's coaches.
This is the third Skier of the Year award for Graefnings this season as she was also named the Women's Collegiate Skier of the Year by FasterSkier.com and was Ski Racing Magazine's Women's Nordic Collegiate Skier of the Year.
Graefnings led Utah to a second-place NCAA finish in the women's Nordic competition with 206 points. Graefnings won the NCAA 5k freestyle title for the first time in her career with a time of 13:51.9. After crossing the finish line of the women's 15k classical race in 53:37.5, only 4.2 seconds behind Colorado's Eliska Hajkova, she claimed second place for the fourth All-American honor of her career. She finished on the podium 11 times in 12 races this season for the Utes and won the first six races of the season and eight overall.
In her second year on the Ute coaching staff, Holt guided Utah's Nordic squads to a dominating season led by the top qualifiers for Nordic on both the men's and women's side. Aside from Graefnings, sophomore Miles Havlick was named Ski Racing Magazine's Men's Nordic Skier of the Year and was an honorable mention selection for FasterSkier.com's Men's Collegiate Skier of the Year honor. Havlick won four of 10 races he entered this season.
