Putilina Named MWC Player of the Week
Utes Face Alabama in First Round of NCAA's
INDIANAPOLIS- Junior Anastasia Putilina of the 49th-ranked University of Utah women's tennis team (16-9) has earned the Mountain West Conference's automatic bid to the 2011 NCAA Division I singles championships, announced Wednesday. In order for a conference to receive an automatic qualification it must have at least one player ranked in the ITA top 125 who has completed at least 13 singles matches.
Putilina, who is the reigning MWC Women's Tennis Player of the Week as well as the 2011 MWC Women's Tennis Player of the Year, has been in the top 125 since she first broke into the ITA rankings last April. She is currently ranked No. 92 and has been as high as No. 67 this season. The Ute is 14-8 in dual-match singles play and has an overall record of 25-13.
The NCAA women's singles and doubles championships will be held May 25-30, in Palo Alto, Calif., directly after the team tournament which takes place May 20-24, with Stanford serving as the host for both.
