No. 52 Utes Host Home Openers...
The 52nd-ranked University of Utah women's tennis team (0-2) hosts Nevada (0-0) and Denver (5-0)* this weekend, in its first home dual-matches of the 2012 season.
"We are excited to open our home stand against two regional opponents," said head coach Mat Iandolo. "Both of these teams will be highly motivated to beat us."
The Utes take on the Wolf Pack Friday, Feb. 10, at 2 p.m. MT, before facing the Pioneers Sunday, Feb. 12, at 11 a.m. MT. Utah is 19-1 at the Eccles Tennis Center since March 2009.
Scouting the Wolf Pack and the Pioneers...
Nevada saw its last action at the Beach Tennis Winter Invitational Jan. 20-22, in Long Beach, Calif. The Wolf Pack's match against the Utes will be their first dual match of the season.
Denver remained undefeated by downing Arkansas State, 6-1, at home last weekend. The Pioneers face BYU in Provo, Utah, Friday before heading up to Salt Lake to meet the Utes.
Last Time Against Nevada and Denver...
The last time the Utes and the Wolf Pack met was in the spring of 2009 in Salt Lake City. Utah captured a 5-2 over Nevada at the Eccles Tennis Center.
Utah has won its last two consecutive meetings with Denver. The Utes blanked the Pioneers 7-0 in Salt Lake City in 2010, before capturing a 6-1 victory in Denver last year.
Kick-Off Weekend Recap...
Utah's last action was two weeks ago at the ITA Kick-Off Weekend in Los Angeles, Calif. The Utes dropped a 4-1 decision to fourth-ranked UCLA on day one, with sophomore Sarah Pham earning Utah's point by upsetting 62nd-ranked McCall Jones 6-3, 6-1, at the No. 2 singles position.
On day two of Kick-Off Weekend, the Utes fell to 25th-ranked Oklahoma by a score of 4-1. Senior Anastasia Putilina, ranked No. 90, captured Utah's point by downing Whitney Ritchie 6-1, 6-1, at the No. 1 spot.
Utes in the ITA Rankings...
Utah is currently ranked No. 52 in the Intercollegiate Tennis Association poll. Putilina came in at No. 90 in the first singles rankings of the season.
