SALT LAKE CITY - The Ute Nordic skiers got off to a solid start last Saturday as the University of Utah skiing team continues competition in Anchorage this week at the UAA and Seawolf Invitationals.
A busy week awaits the squad as the Ute Nordic team will complete its portion of the UAA Invitational today with the 10k freestyle races.
Utah's Alpine squad will compete in Alaska for the first time in the giant slalom at the Alyeska Resort, followed by the slalom on Friday.
The Seawolf Invitational begins Thursday with the 5/10k freestyle and the GS events. The 15/20k classical races will be held the following day and the slalom will cap the trip on Saturday.

Nordic Athletes Open UAA Invite with Three Podium Finishes
Graefnings turned in a second-place effort in the women's 5k classical race during her season debut last Saturday at Kincaid Park.
The Utes rank second after day one of the UAA Invitational as they combined for 228 points and only trail defending national champion Colorado by three points (231). Led by a pair of podium finishes, Utah's women's team posted a meet-high 124 points and the men's squad turned in a 104-point day.
"We're on our way to the venue right now and it looks like a beautiful day for a race," Utah Head Nordic coach Abi Holt said. "I think the team is excited for today's event and I look forward to seeing what we can put together out there."
Graefnings returned to the Utah squad after competing in the Swedish national championships and led the Ute women during her season debut by turning in a second-place effort, the 11th time in her Utah career that she has finished second or better.
Rose Kemp joined Graefnings on the podium with a third-place effort, which was the first time she has placed on the podium during her career.
Leading the way for the Utes on the men's course was Miles Havlick, who took third place. He has now been recognized on the podium in four out of five races this season and in 13 of his races during his time at Utah.
Ute Alpine Skiers Among Leaders in RMISA MVP Points
Senior Tii-Maria Romar is atop the RMISA's MVP standings with 240 points, only two points ahead of teammate Julie Bordeau.
Romar has not finished outside the top four in the first five races of this season. She won the giant slalom at Denver on Jan. 14 and also took second in the GS at the CU Invite on Jan. 7.
Bordeau has also won two races, the slalom at Colorado and Denver, in addition to three fifth-place effort.
Anna Kocken is the third Ute in the top five after finishing on the podium at the RMISA GS Qualifier and in the slalom race at Colorado.
Ryan Wilson and Nick Cohee were among the top five in the men's standings. Wilson posted top-10 efforts in each of his first five events, highlighted by a runner-up effort in the slalom at CU.
Cohee won the GS races at the Colorado and Denver Invites in addition to a second-place finish in the RMISA GS Qualifier.
