Utah Valley Review: Junior outfielder Katelyn Elliott (Spanish Fork, Utah) lined a single to right field and a Utah Valley misplay allowed Kelsi Hoopiiaina (Riverton, Utah) to plate the winning run in Utah's 3-2 eight-inning victory over UVU on Tuesday. Elliott is now third on the team with 43 hits this year.
Utah earned its first extra-inning win of the year and improved to 1-1 in extra-inning contests this season.
The Utes' other extra-inning affair was a 1-0 loss to Stony Brook in eight innings on Mar. 10 at the Florida Gulf Coast Spring Break Invitational.
Kelsi Crushes It: Hoopiiaina turned in her 14th multi-hit performance of the year on Tuesday against UVU, while going 2-for-3 at the plate with a home run against the Wolverines.
`Hoop' is now tied with Elliott and senior third baseman Whitney Holm (Spanish Fork, Utah) for team-high honors with eight round-trippers this season.
On the basepaths, Hoopiiaina also stole base on UVU to improve to a perfect 18-of-18 on stolen base attempts this year, which is tied for fourth place in the Pac-12 this season.
Generra Deals: Senior Generra Nielson (Blanding, Utah) registered her 16th complete game of the year with an 8.0-inning performance Tuesday against Utah Valley. She allowed just one earned run on only five hits against UVU to go along with 12 strikeouts.
Nielson notched her 11th double-digit strikeout game of this season against the Wolverines en route to her 20th win of the year. She improved to 20-16 on the season.
Nielson already has 478 career K's in two years at Utah and needs to average six strikeouts per game this series to pass Janet Womack (1989-92) for third place on Utah's all-time strikeout list.
Holm Approaches RBI Milestone: Holm has driven in 130 runs over her career at Utah. She needs just one more RBI to tie Sunny Smith (1997-2000) and Niki Hayhurst (2000-03) for fourth place in the school record book.
