RED RIVER, N.M. - Sophomore Ana Kobal finished second and Eian Sandvik was fourth to help the University of Utah ski team to a second-place finish after Sunday's slalom races at the New Mexico Invitational in the Red River Ski Area.
The Utes accumulated 851 points in the team standings to finish in second place, which was 43 points ahead of third-place Denver.
"The team is really developing poise and confidence in all disciplines," Utah Director of Skiing Kevin Sweeney said. "I am impressed with our results and the ability to be this close to the overall win. We are executing well, but also know we can still make some nice improvements. The teams have done an exceptional job of maintaining health, motivation, and academic responsibilities while on the road. We are excited to be home for some rest and recovery and excellent training before Regional Championships."
Utah led the way in the women's slalom rankings with 118 points as all three Ute competitors placed among the top 10.
Kobal finished as the runner-up and she has now recorded a third-place effort to lead the Utes. She has been on the podium four times during the 2013 season for Utah, while recording seven top-five efforts. Kobal turned in the day's second-fastest second run after crossing the finish line in 47.79 seconds.
Kristiina Rove was fourth in the individual standings, which marked the third time she has tied her season-best performance.
Jaime Dupratt was the third Ute to place among the top 10 as she finished 10th in today's competition.
The Utes ranked fourth in the men's slalom standings as they accumulated 87 points today.
Sandvik led the way after turning in a fourth-place finish, which was his highest finish of his career.
Freshman Andy Trow turned in a 15th-place finish and Ryan Wilson followed in 29th.
Up next for the Utes is the RMISA/NCAA West Region Championships on Feb. 22-24 in Bozeman, Mont.
