Utah Softball Falls Short in Deseret First Duel

PROVO, Utah - Sophomore Marissa Mendenhall connected on a two-run double in the seventh, but the University of Utah softball team dropped a 4-2 contest to BYU in a Deseret First Duel matchup on Saturday at Gail Miller Field.

Utah (24-30-1) had seven hits on the day, including Mendenhall's two-run double in the seventh. The Stansbury Park, Utah native finished this season with 31 RBI and now has 41 over her career. She also had 13 doubles this season and 16 for her career.

Freshman third baseman Kristen Stewart went 2-for-3 with a pair of singles for her sixth multi-hit effort of the season.

Sophomore Mariah Ramirez allowed three earned runs on 12 hits in what turned out to be her eighth complete-game effort of the season. Unfortunately, the Hawaiian Gardens, Calif., native saw her record fall to 10-13 on the year.

Senior shortstop Kelsi Hoopiiaina singled to left center with one out in the first and then stole second base, but the Utes came away empty-handed.

Coco Taualii started the scoring with a solo home run for BYU to lead off the second frame. The Cougars then scored three more times to grab a 4-0 advantage.

Senior second baseman Jackie Sweet, sophomore left fielder Kate Dickman and Stewart began the Utah seventh with three consecutive singles to load the bases for the Utes. Mendenhall drove a double to over the head of the Cougar center field that allowed Sweet and Dickman to score and cut BYU's lead in half.

BYU (33-23) received a 3-for-4 effort with an RBI from Gordy Bravo, while Tori Almond picked up her 12th win of the season after allowing only three hits in 5.2 shutout innings to go with four strikeouts. She is now 12-6 this season.
