SALT LAKE CITY- After taking a week off to prepare, the University of Utah women's cross country team will travel west this Friday to compete at the Pac-12 Conference Championships. The six-kilometer race will be held at the Metropolitan Golf Links in Oakland, Calif., and will begin at 10:00 a.m. PT. Television coverage of the event will debut in two half-hour specials on Monday, Nov. 3 starting at 6 p.m. PT on the Pac-12 Network.
"The Pac-12 Conference is the premiere distance running conference in the country," Utah head coach Kyle Kepler said. "With six ranked teams competing, the Pac-12 Championships is almost always one of the toughest conference meets in the country. Our goal is to finish in the top half and keep moving our program forward. Our kids will have to be at their bests Friday and I know they are ready to go."
The Utes will have their work cut out for them as they will be going head-to-head with six nationally-ranked teams. Slated to compete will be third-ranked Oregon, seventh-ranked Colorado, 11th-ranked Stanford, 17th-ranked Washington, 22nd-ranked Arizona State and 29th-ranked UCLA.
Leading the charge for the Utes on Friday will be true freshman Sarah Feeny. Competing for the first time in a conference championship meet, Feeny looks to run like a seasoned veteran. Accompanying Feeny in the front of the pack will be senior Rebekah Winterton, who is coming off an impressive performance at the NCAA Pre-Nationals, where she finished second for the Utes and 77th overall.
Freshmen Hannah McInturff and Shaylen Crook will also need to have solid performances in order to improve upon last year's finish. Battling for the fifth spot will senior Nicole Rietz, sophomore Jessica Sams, and junior Andrea Chavez. Rietz started the season off strong with three top-ten performances, but Sams and Chavez have clawed their way into the mix.
Last Season at the Pac-12 Championships
In their third year as a member of the Pac-12, the Utes captured eighth place in 2013. Leading the Utes was Rebekah Winterton, who recorded a successful 12th-place performance. Returning leaders, Andrea Chavez posted a 44th-place time, followed by Nicole Rietz in 66th. The team tallied 207 points edging California and Washington State in the team standings.
