SALT LAKE CITY - The 55th-nationally ranked University of Utah women's tennis team impressed in their 2014 home opener, besting the No. 50 Denver Pioneers 5-2 at the Eccles Tennis Center.
"I don't' feel great about how we played, but I feel good about how we competed," said Utah head coach Mat Iandolo. "I feel good about the win because it's a ranked win, but we need to do a better job of focusing in the future. We let our focus get away from us a little tonight and it made for some long, hard matches. We will defiantly try to do a better job of that as we move through the rest of our season."
Tereza Bekerova and Paige Miles teamed up in doubles play to tally the Utes first win over Schnell and Garpenlov out of the first spot (8-4).
Sarah Pham and Callie Craig then added a victory over Van Genechten and Slattry (8-5) to secure the doubles point for the Utes.
Bekerova and Pham each collected hard-fought victories out of the top two singles spots. Bekerova topped Schnell in three (7-5, 5-7, 6-1), while Pham surpassed Slattery, also taking the match into three sets (7-5, 6-7, 7-5).
Craig collected a victory out of the No. 3 singles spot, while da Rosa capped the Utes effort with a win at No. 6.
The Utes head to Boise State on Saturday, Feb. 15 with the opening serve scheduled for 11 a.m.
