SALT LAKE CITY - Ranked 37th in the nation, the University of Utah women's tennis team (9-2) blanked No. 23 Houston (11-3) at home, winning 7-0 to execute the upset.
Beginning the match at Coach Mike's Tennis Academy, the Utes took the lead in doubles. Playing out of the No. 3 spot, Craig and Pham tallied the first win over Charlotte Phillips and Rocio Martin Fernandez, 8-4. Bekerova and Miles secured the doubles point, defeating Despoina Vegasari and Elena Kordolaimi 8-6 out of the first spot.
With the doubles point decided, the No. 2 match between Utah's Luisa da Rosa and Sarah Richter and Houston's Maria Andrea Cardenas and Tina Rupert was called at 7-7.
With the outdoor temperature cooling, the match was moved indoors to the Eccles Tennis Center at the close of doubles play.
Da Rosa earned the first single victory for the Utes, topping Martin at the sixth spot, 6-1, 6-3. Miles followed suit, adding a win out of No. 5 over Phillips, 6-1, 6-1.
Richter defeated Tina Rupert at No. 4 (6-2, 7-5) to grab the fourth point for the Utes and lock down the win, though both team elected to continue play.
No. 125 Bekerova pulled off an upset at the first singles spot over No. 80 Vogasari (6-1, 6-3), while Craig earned a win at No. 3 against Cardenas, 6-3, 6-2.
Pham summed up the competition, defeating Kordolaimi at No. 2, 6-4, 7-6.
Utah is back in action Friday, facing the number one team in the nation, UCLA. The first serve is scheduled for 1:30 p.m. and depending on the weather will be played indoors at the Eccles Tennis Center or outdoors at Coach Mike's Tennis Academy.
