SALT LAKE CITY - The 27th-ranked University of Utah women's tennis team bounced back from back-to-back losses over the weekend to defeat No. 62 Marshall at the Eccles Tennis Center 5-2 earlier this evening. The Utes improve their season record to 10-4.
"Today was a solid win over a ranked opponent," said Utah head coach Mat Iandolo. "I felt like we could've played better, but we competed well enough to pull out the victory. It's always tough to face a team that's ranked a little below you, but has the talent to beat you."
Beginning with doubles play, Utah's No. 1 duo of Tereza Bekerova and Paige Miles easily defeated Dana Oppinger and 8-4 to lend the favor to the Utes.
The No. 2 match finished shortly after with Karli Timiko and Anna Pomytinskaya downing Luisa da Rosa and Sarah Richter, 8-4 to even the score between the two teams.
With the score leveled, the doubles point came down to the number threes. Sitting at 7-5, Sarah Pham and Callie Craig were able to capture the final point to defeat Kai Broomfield and Rachael Morales 8-6 and secure the doubles victory for the Utes.
Downing Dana Oppinger 6-2, 6-2 at No. 1, #125 Bekerova tallied the first win for the Utes in singles play, boosting the Ute squad to 2-0 over the Heard.
Richter was second to finish, dropping the No. 4 match to Pomytinskaya, 6-1, 6-3.
At the fifth spot, Miles rallied for the win over Karli Timiko (6-2, 6-2) to pad the Utah lead, 3-1.
The three remaining matches went down to the wire as the No. 2 and No. 6 battles were taken into the third game, while Craig, playing at No. 3, continued in a hard-fought second set.
Pham reached the finish line first at No. 2, clinching the match for the Utes with her defeat of Darya Turhan, 6-2, 5-7, 6-1.
Da Rosa would ultimately fall in the third set at No. 6, while Craig captured the win at No. 3 in a third-set tiebreaker.
The Utes prepare to take on No. 16 Cal Friday at 1:30 p.m. Weather depending; the match will be played indoors at the Eccles Tennis Center or outdoors at Coach Mike's Tennis Academy.
