SALT LAKE CITY - The 27th-ranked University of Utah women's tennis team (10-6) dropped a tough match to the undefeated Stanford Cardinal (10-0) 4-0 today at Coach Mike's Tennis Academy. Every singles competitor for the Cardinal is ranked in the top-40 nationally, while two of three of the squad's doubles teams are ranked.
Stanford jumped to an early lead in doubles play, tallying wins at No. 2 and No. 3.
No. 27 duo Taylor Davidson and Ellen Tsay easily topped sophomore Sarah Richter and freshman Luisa da Rosa at No. 2 doubles (8-1) to give the Cardinal the advantage.
Senior Paige Miles and junior Tereza Bekerova went deep into the No. 1 match, but ultimately were topped 8-5 by No. 17 Kristie Ahn and Carol Zhao.
Seniors Sarah Pham and Callie Craig battled in the third spot against Caroline Doyle and Krista Hardebeck, but the match was called at 7-4 with Stanford in the lead as the Cardinal secured the doubles point.
No. 27 Davidson tallied the first singles point for the Cardinal, defeating Richter 6-1, 6-1 out of the fourth spot.
The second-ranked singles player Ahn follow her teammates' lead as she topped Bekerova at No. 1 (6-2, 6-1), putting Stanford ahead 3-0.
The clash at No. 6 would be the deciding match as No. 34 Caroline Doyle bested Luisa da Rosa, 6-4, 6-2.
The second, third and fifth matches were left unfinished.
The Utes take the week off before returning to the Eccles Tennis Center on April 2 where they will see Montana at 5 p.m.
