UCLA Takes Series Opener From Utah Softball

LOS ANGELES - The University of Utah softball team dropped the first game of its Pac-12 Conference series at No. 1 UCLA by an 8-0 score in five innings on Friday night at Easton Stadium.
Utah (12-13, 1-5 Pac-12) received a two-out walk from sophomore third baseman Kristen Stewart before a base hit through the left side of the UCLA defense by senior center fielder Chalese Hadley in the third inning to put Utes on first and second base. Unfortunately, the Bruins were able to get a ground out to get out of the inning.
Freshman second baseman Hannah Flippen led off the fourth inning with a base hit past the UCLA shortstop and advanced to second base via a sacrifice bunt by freshman shortstop Anissa Urtez. Flippen then advanced to third base after a wild pitch, but UCLA once again was able to keep Utah off the scoreboard.
Sophomore catcher Shelby Pacheco roped a one-out single up the middle in the fifth frame.
Sophomore right-hander Kayce Nieto started on the mound, but saw her record dip to 7-10 in pitching decisions during 2014.
No. 1 UCLA (31-2, 6-1 Pac-12) benefited from a 5.0-inning, three-hit, five-strikeout shutout performance on the mound by Ally Carda, who is now 18-1 on the season.
