SALT LAKE CITY - The 30th-ranked University of Utah women's tennis team improved to 11-6 on the season with a victory over Montana at the Eccles Tennis Center. This marks the fifth time this season the Utes have shut out their opponents.
"This was a tough match against an unranked but well-coached team," said Utah head coach Mat Iandolo. "It gave us what we needed in terms of a competitive match going into a big Pac-12 weekend on the road."
The Utes started the match off with a sweep in doubles play. Tereza Bekerova and Paige finished first with a win over Haley Driver and Precious Ghadamosi at the No. 1 spot (8-5).
Sarah Pham and Callie Craig overpowered opponents Ashley Mackey and Maddy Murry to win the third match easily (8-1), while the No. 2 match went down to the wire with Luisa da Rosa and Sarah Richer ultimately topping Sasha Carter and Laurence Pelchat, 7-6 (6).
Freshman da Rosa lead the charge for the Utes in singles play as she handily defeated Murray out of the sixth spot, 6-1, 6-1.
Richter gave the Utes a 3-0 edge over the Griz with her win out of No. 4 over Pelchat, 6-2, 6-1.
With a win at No. 1 singles, Bekerova secured the overall victory for the Utes. The 79th-ranked Utah singles player defeated Driver, 6-4, 6-3.
The match continued as Pham topped Gbadamosi at No. 2 (6-3, 7-5) and Miles came out on top in the No. 5 match over Mackey.
After dropping the first set, Craig battled back against Carter to win the second set. Taking the match into a tiebreaker, Craig came away with the victory (4-6, 7-6, (10-4)).
Utah heads south this weekend to face No. 35 Arizona Friday and No. 23 Arizona State Saturday. The Utes match against the Sun Devils will be televised on Pac-12 Networks beginning at 10:30 a.m.
