Utah vs. Washington State
Sept. 27, 2014
Head Coach Kyle Whittingham
Opening statement:
"We definitely let that one get away from us, had a 21-0 lead but didn't do much after that. There were a lot of positives for the defense, for the most part they played well, causing three takeaways. The kicking game was solid, had another return for touchdown, but when you score one offensive touchdown you don't have much of a chance to win. That was really the issue. We have to be more productive, particularly throwing the ball. We ran the ball well. [Devontae] Booker had a big night. We dropped some balls and didn't make some plays that we should have made. As bad as we played from 21-0 forward, we still had a chance to win, just had to make a play. Get a stop on defense and make a play on defense. We couldn't get it done. Give credit to Washington State. They hung in there, persevered, and made plays. [Connor] Halliday is a tough kid, good quarterback. They kept playing hard. I didn't see any of our guys stop playing hard. It wasn't for lack of effort, we just stopped making plays for whatever reason."
On the offense:
"We didn't do a good job of throwing the football. Going 18-for-38 for 165 yards is not good enough, not in this league."
On Travis Wilson:
"He had an off night. He didn't make throws he usually makes. The ball was sailing on him a little bit and we had a lot of drops. His numbers look a lot better if we make the catches we usually make. It's no one person's fault. I'm not trying to exclusively point the finger at the offense because all we had to do was get a stop on defense or make another big play on special teams. We're all involved, but I know we have to be more productive on offense."
Utah Running Back Devontae Booker
On the game:
"It was a tough loss. We played a good Washington State team. Everyone in this conference is great. We had a 21-point lead and everything went south from there. We had a lot of chances to win, but just didn't come through tonight."
Utah Defensive End Jason Fanaika
On the second half:
"We weren't getting tired. We were going all out. The only thing to say is [Washington State's] players made plays. We were tuned in. We were ready to go, but when the opportunities presented themselves, their players made the plays. We'll get it fixed. When the opportunity comes again, I'm fully confident that our players will make the plays in that situation again."
Utah Wide Receiver Kaelin Clay
On his punt return for touchdown:
"I could care less about that punt return right now, I'd rather be 4-0. It was set up by the other 10 guys on the field. I had two great blocks then I did the rest."
On his receiving performance:
"[Washington State] was in a Cover 4 so the flats were open. I was playing the slot so you get more balls thrown your way on the outside. That was just our game plan heading in to attack that area."
