PARK CITY, Utah - Former Utah All-American skiers Spencer Eccles and John Aalberg will be inducted into the Will and Jean Pickett Intermountain Ski Hall of Fame on Thursday, Sept. 25.
Eccles, a 1957 All-American for the Utes, was the first alternate on the U.S. 1958 FIS World Championship ski team. He placed third in the slalom at the Canadian National Championship and second in the slalom at U.S. Nationals. Eccles and his late wife Cleone have been two of Utah's most enthusiastic boosters, active volunteers and generous donors dating back to their days as students.
Aalberg, a native of Norway, won national titles in nordic skiing in both 1984 and 1985. He was also an All-American on the cross country team in 1986. Aalberg was a member of the U.S. Olympic Team in 1992 and 1994. He served as a venue designer and director of the Olympic and Paralympic nordic venues for the 2002 and 2010 Winter Olympics.
Hall of fame selections are made annually by knowledgeable winter sports historians and enthusiasts from Utah, Idaho and Wyoming. Criteria for induction is based on exemplary achievements in the areas of skiing competition, skiing innovation, ski sport development and contributions to the promotion of winter sports in the Intermountain Area.
The induction ceremony will take place at the U.S. Ski and Snowboard Association's Center of Excellence at Quinn's Junction in Park City.
