No. 4 Utah becomes bowl eligible for the second straight year and moves to 6-0 with a 34-18 win against Arizona State. Utah is now 7-20 all-time against Arizona State after its first win against the Sun Devils since 1976 and first victory over ASU in Salt Lake City since 1973. This is Utah's first 6-0 start since winning the first eight in 2010. The Utes are now 17-22 in league games as a member of the Pac-12 Conference. This is Utah's first 3-0 start in the Pac-12 since joining the conference in 2011.
Utah is 16-2 when ranked in the top 10 of the Associated Press poll. The Utes are 5-0 when scoring first this season and has scored first in all but one game.
Attendance was 46,192, which is the eighth-largest crowd in Rice-Eccles Stadium history. Utah has now sold out 35 consecutive contests with 31 played before standing-room only crowds.
The Utes outgained the Sun Devils 92 to 5 in the first quarter and held a 10:56 to 4:04 advantage in time of possession in the quarter. ASU had just 55 yards of offense in the fourth quarter, including -27 rushing yards.
The Utes won the turnover battle 2-0 against ASU to improve on their national-leading turnover margin. Utah has gained 19 turnovers with seven lost this season.
Utah converted its three red zone chances with a pair of touchdowns and a field goal. The Utes are 23-of-24 (95.8%) this season in red zone opportunities.
Arizona State's third-quarter safety was the first allowed by Utah since facing Oregon State on Oct. 29, 2011.
Senior quarterback Travis Wilson made his fifth start of the season (32nd career).He is 5-0 as the starter (20-12 career). Wilson was 26-of-36 passing (72.2%) for 297 yards and two touchdowns. He has 14 200-yard passing games.
Nine different Utes made catches, led by senior wide receiver Kenneth Scott's career-high 116 receiving yards on five catches with a touchdown, his first career 100-yard receiving game. He made a 42-yard reception at the start of the second quarter, his longest since his first year in 2011. He followed on the next play by an 11-yard touchdown catch, his second this season and the ninth of his career.
Freshman wide receiver Tyrone Smith had a season-high 50 yards on three receptions. Freshman Britain Covey had five catches for 34 yards. Sophomore tight end Harrison Handley had five catches totaling 29 yards. Redshirt freshman wide receiver Raelon Singleton made his first career reception for six yards in the second quarter.
Senior running back Devontae Booker had 118 rushing yards (21 carries) with touchdown runs of 25 and 62 yards. It was his 11th career 100-yard rushing game. He also added 14 receiving yards (four catches). Booker has eight rushing touchdowns this season.
Junior Hunter Dimick led the defense with 3.0 TFL and 0.5 sacks. He has 21.0 TFL in his career and 12.5 sacks.
Gionni Paul led Utah with 11 tackles (1.0 TFL). Jared Norris was second on the team with nine tackles. Norris had 2.0 TFL and 1.0 sack (his first sack of the season). Utah had five total sacks on the night led by 2.0 sacks from Pita Taumoepenu, and totaled 11.0 TFL.
Junior Cory Butler-Byrd played on both sides of the ball for the third time this season and redshirt freshman Chase Hansen made his debut at safety in the third quarter. Butler-Byrd made his second career interception in the final moments of the game.
Tom Hackett averaged 46.9 yards on eight punts (375 yards) with two downed inside the 10 (8 and 5-yard lines).
Andy Phillips went 2-for-2 in field goals with makes from 43 and 35 yards. He is now 10-for-13 this season and has made 50 career field goals (50-of-61). He was 3-for-3 on PAT attempts.
