TUCSON, Ariz. - The Utah volleyball team fell in straight sets to the No. 14-ranked Arizona Wildcats, falling 17-25, 19-25 and 16-25 in Pac-12 Conference action at the McKale Center Sunday afternoon.
Sophomore Adora Anae led the Utes with 12 kills and she posted her 12th double-double of the season with 11 kills in the match. Freshman Megan Shughrou led Utah with 12 digs, while senior Kendall Cygan added nine digs to go along with her team-high 17 assists.
Despite Carly Trueman's six kills and .750 hitting percentage in the first set, Utah dropped the frame 25-17. The Wildcats recorded 15 kills and just two hitting errors on the way to a .371 hitting percentage.
Utah started out hot in the second set, but Arizona picked up late and after tying the match 15-15, pulled away late to take the frame 25-19. Utah opened the set with five straight points, but Arizona's 8-1 run late in the set proved to be too much. Utah did limit the Wildcats to just .261 hitting in the second set, but Utah had five hitting errors on the way to hitting just .146.
The Wildcats opened the third frame winning four of the five points and Utah would come back to tie it a four-all, but a 6-1 run from the home team put the set out of reach and Arizona came away winning the set, 25-16, on the way to sweeping the match.
The loss drops Utah to 7-14 overall and 1-9 in Pac-12 play. Meanwhile, Arizona moved to 14-8 overall on the season and 4-6 in the conference.
Trueman, a hometown product of Tucson, finished the match with nine kills and a team-best .389 hitting percentage. Arizona's Kalei Mau led the match with 14 kills and she posted a .308 hitting percentage on the day.
The Wildcats had three players hit over .600 and the home squad finished the match hitting at a clip of .293. The Utes tallied 22 hitting errors on the day and finished hitting just .103.
Utah will return home next weekend to host Oregon and Oregon State in Pac-12 action. The Utes and Ducks will play on Friday, Oct. 30, before following with a match against the Beavers on Sunday, Nov. 1.
