Utah Head Coach Kyle Whittingham
Opening statement …
"It was a disappointing loss, and you have to give credit to Arizona. They played well and made a couple more plays than we did. I think that made the difference. It was a tight ball game the whole way, statistically. I looked up at the board in the fourth quarter and it was just about dead even. I think we lost the turnover battle, and when we lose the turnover battle, we do not win very often. Again, give credit to the Wildcats. They made good plays when they had to. The last touchdown pass was a great throw and great catch. We had good coverage, and our guy was in good position. We need to figure out what our deficiencies were, watch the tape and get them fixed, because it does not get any easier next week with UCLA coming to town. That is the nature of the conference, every week is a challenge. We will regroup and come back. We are still tied for first, and we need some help obviously now. We do not control our own destiny, but we will see how things shake out. I know we have two games left, and we have to come back and be ready to be at our best next week against the Bruins."
On Arizona challenging the corners …
"They were just doing a good job throwing the ball. [Anu] Solomon played his best game of the year. Oftentimes when they are in position, they make plays, and sometimes they just beat us on the route. But that has not been our problem against them for the past three years. The last three years they have been able to run the ball against us, but tonight we played the run pretty well, only to no avail because we were not good in coverage. We also lost the turnover battle."
On Arizona quarterback Anu Solomon evading pressure ...
"He kept avoiding pressure and finding the crease. We did not do a good enough job keeping him in the cage. Our pass rush lanes were not good enough. He is a slippery guy to give him credit and he made us miss a lot. Like I said, we watched his tape from the whole season and he played a very good game."
Utah junior cornerback Brian Allen
On Arizona rushing the ball …
"I knew we were playing a good team coming into the game. We just wanted to be the best defense we could be but sometimes things just unfortunately don't go your way. They made some more plays than we did and things didn't go our way at times."
On finishing the regular season with two home games …
"These games are going to be really important. Any team coming into Utah knows it is going to be a tough environment. We look at the crowd as our 12th man out there so I think finishing these last two games at home could be huge accomplishments for us."
On playing defense …
"I didn't feel like it [the transition] was that tough. I've been put in situations before where there are quick offenses like what we saw tonight. I just have to get used to the tempo of the offenses. Sometimes they aren't that fast because we have a really physical defense, but this offense runs really quick. They seemed to pick up tempo as the game went on."
On biggest defensive problems …
"I felt like our biggest struggle was just containing (Anu) Solomon. We had a couple good plays but we just couldn't stop him. He's a good quarterback. When you can move around in the pocket and make plays down the field, that's really hard to stop defensively. All in all, I felt like our defense played a good game."
