SALT LAKE CITY - The International University Sports Federation has selected Jena Cheng of Utah women's tennis to compete for Canada at the Summer Universiade in Gwangju, Korea in July.
The Summer Universiade is an international sporting and cultural festival which takes place in a new city every two years. The event features over 13 sporting events and more than 9,000 student-athletes and officials from over 170 countries.
"I am really excited," said Cheng. "I am thrilled to represent Canada and meet new people. I just want to go and play my best."
Cheng was selected as one of three female tennis athletes to represent Canada this summer with the selection criterion based on NCAA rankings, national rankings and recent results.
"I am proud of Jena," said Utah head coach Mat Iandolo. "She is part of the `new wave' of Canadian players, led by Milos Raonic and Genie Bouchard. As good of a player as she is, she is equally as good a teammate."
As a freshman, Cheng is currently 1-1 in dual matches playing out of the No. 3 position and boasts an upset of Tulsa's No. 125 Yelena Nemchen. Cheng also collected five wins throughout the tournament season.
