LONG BEACH, Calif. - The Utah softball team dropped a 3-1 decision to Long Beach State Saturday morning on day three of the So Cal Collegiate Classic at 49er Softball Complex.
LBSU's Amanda Hansen (W, 2-0) limited the Utes to just one run on three hits over her seven full innings of work and Leilani Tupua-Tautalatasi collected a pair of hits with three runs batted in for the 49ers, offensively.
Utah's hurler, Miranda Viramontes (Fr., Chino,Calif.) took the loss and fell to 0-2 on the season after giving up four runs on five hits in 5.1 innings of work.
The 49ers got on the board first with a RBI-single from Lauren Lombardi, who drove in Shayna Kimbrough on her hit through the rightside of the infield in the bottom of the first inning. LBSU then tacked on a pair of runs in the bottom of the second inning to take a 3-0 lead when Tupua-Tautalatasi cleared the bases with her two-run triple to right field.
Utah's Kendal Bergman (Sr., Wheat Ridge, Colo.) led off the top of the third inning with a single in her first at bat of the season and she would then move to second on a sacrifice bunt from Maddy Woodard (Sr., Murray, Utah). Bergman then moved to third when Hannah Flippen (So., Bonita, Calif.) reached base on a fielder's choice and then she promptly scored on Kristen Stewart's (Jr., Covina, Calif.) fielder's choice. LBSU would manage to get out of the inning giving up just the one run to lead by two runs, 3-1.
The 49ers took back its three-run lead in the bottom of the fourth inning when Tupua-Tautalatasi drove in LT Torres on a single to center field. Katie Donovan (Fr., Salem, Ore.), who came into the game in relief of Viramontes, would strikeout the next batter to get the Utes out of the inning, down 4-1.
The loss drops Utah to 0-3 on the young season, while the 49ers improved to 3-0.
Utah, who is currently facing Idaho State as part of Saturday's doubleheader, will close out the So Cal Classic on Sunday against the 49ers. First pitch is set for 9 a.m. (PT).
