PALO ALTO, Calif. -- The Utah softball team dropped a Pac-12 Conference game to Stanford Saturday afternoon, falling 4-2 to the Cardinal at Smith Family Stadium.
The Utes moved to 21-13 overall and 1-7 in Pac-12 play, while Stanford pushed its record to 15-18 on the season and 1-7 in the Pac-12.
Stanford got on the board in the second inning with a solo home run from Kylie Sorenson, which gave the Cardinal an early 1-0. Stanford later extended its lead to 4-0 with a three-run double from Erin Ashby in the bottom of the third inning.
The Utes pushed across its first run of the game in the top of the fourth inning when Marissa Mendenhall doubled and Heather Bowen drove in a run with her double to center field. Shelbi Everett, who came in to pinch run for Mendenhall, scored on the play to pull the Utes within three, down 4-1.
Katie Donovan retired 11-consecutive Stanford batters and Utah had a chance heading into its final at bat in the seventh inning. Hannah Flippen led off the inning with a solo home run -- her fourth of the season -- to pull Utah within two runs, but after Kate Dickman was hit with a pitch, Utah recorded three-straight ground outs to end the inning and the game.
Mendenhall and Bowen led the Utes at the plate with a pair of hits each. Mendenhall is now 5-for-9 over the first two games in the series.
Donovan (L, 8-5) took the loss in the circle for the Utes, giving up the four runs on just four hits and striking out seven -- one shy from her career high -- and tossing her team-leading eighth complete game of the season.
Sorensen (W, 3-3) picked up the win for the Cardinal, giving up the two runs on eight hits and striking out one Utah batter.
The two teams will conclude the series tomorrow with the rubber-match scheduled to begin at 12 p.m. PT/1 p.m. MT. The game will be televised live on the Pac-12 Networks.
