HONOLULU, Hawai'i - The Utah softball team split doubleheader action at the Hawai'I Spring Fling, earning a 3-2 win over Longwood, but then falling 4-0 to East Carolina Friday evening at Rainbow Wahine Softball Stadium in Honolulu.
The Utes (16-5) managed to record a one-run victory over the Lancers (2-12) in game one when Heather Bowen broke a 2-2 tie in the bottom of the sixth inning with a go-ahead sacrifice fly. Anissa Urtez led off the bottom of the frame with a single and Bowen drove her in to score what would eventually become the game-winning run.
Urtez was one of four different Utah players to record a pair of hits in game one as Hannah Flippen, Kate Dickman and Marissa Mendenhall collected a pair of base knocks each, as well.
Miranda Viramontes (W, 6-3), who managed to get out of a seventh inning jam, gave up just the two runs on 10 hits and struck out three to earn her first complete-game-win of the season.
Utah's 12-game winning streak came to an end in game two when the Pirates (7-12) managed to shutout the Utes for the first time this season and the first time since an 8-0 loss to UCLA back on March 28 of last season.
The Pirates, who outhit the Utes 7-4, plated home four runs on six hits in the bottom of the second inning and it turned out to be more than enough as ECU starting pitcher Sarah Christian (W, 4-3) did not allow a run and struck out three on the way to a complete-game shutout.
Katie Donovan (L, 5-2) snapped a five-game winning streak inside the circle, giving up all four runs on seven hits in just two full innings of work. Kayce Nieto came into the game in relief of Donovan and threw four innings of no-hit softball.
The Utah offense failed to register an extra-base hit and despite drawing three walks, the Utes stranded a total of six base runners throughout the contest.
The Utes will return to action again on Saturday with a single game against tournament host, Hawai'i. First pitch between the Utes and Rainbow Wahine is set for 4 p.m. HT/7 p.m. MT.
