Utah moves to 2-0 for the third-straight season with a win over Utah State in the 112th all-time meeting between the schools. Utah is now 79-29-4 all-time against Utah State with wins in 14 of the last 15 contests. The Utes are now 296-154-11 all-time against current Mountain West Conference schools.
The attendance of 46,011 is the eighth-largest in Rice-Eccles Stadium history and the Utes have now sold out 33-consecutive home games. Of the sellouts, 30 have been played before standing-room only crowds that exceed stadium capacity.
Utah limited Utah State to 14 yards of total offense in the third quarter (12 rush, 2 pass).
Utah scored touchdowns on its first three attempts in the red zone and was 4-for-4 on red zone chances. The Utes have scored on all seven of their red zone opportunities this season (after going 3-for-3 in the season opener against Michigan). Five of their seven red zone chances this season have resulted in touchdowns (.714).
Utah has five interceptions in two games this season. In 2014, Utah did not have five interceptions until game four. Sophomore defensive back Marcus Williams came up with his second interception in as many games in the second quarter, and the third of his career. Gionni Paul had an interception in the fourth quarter, his fourth career pick (first of the season).
Senior linebacker Jared Norris led Utah with 10 tackles, with eight coming in the first half. He now has eight career double-figure tackle games.
In his first play on defense of the game, Pita Taumoepenu came off the edge and came up with a sack and forced a fumble to stop a Utah State drive with just over eight minutes left in the fourth quarter. It was Taumoepenu's first career forced fumble and he has 7.5 career sacks.
Senior running back Devontae Booker led Utah in rushing with 120 yards (31 carries), his eighth career 100-yard game. He scored his second rushing touchdown of the year in the second quarter on a 4-yard rush. He has 12 career rushing touchdowns (14 total TDs). He led Utah with 133 all-purpose yards, which included 13 receiving yards (two catches).
Senior quarterback Travis Wilson went 9-of-12 for 76 yards passing (0 TD, 0 INT). He rushed for a 12-yard score in the first quarter, his second rushing touchdown of the season and the 16th of his career. Wilson rushed for 49 yards on five carries, including a 38-yard rush, the second-longest rush of his career. He is 17-12 as Utah's starting quarterback.
Senior quarterback Kendal Thompson came on in relief of Wilson in his first appearance of the season. Thompson rushed for a two-yard touchdown in the third quarter for his second career rushing touchdown. He ran six times for 23 yards (long of 9). Thompson was 8-of-10 passing (80%) for 56 yards (0 TD, 0 INT).
Six different Utes caught passes, led by freshman Britain Covey, who made his first career start at slot receiver. He led the team with six receptions for 61 yards, both team highs. Covey also returned five punts for 37 yards, including a 30-yard return to start the fourth quarter. He finished second on the team with 98 all-purpose yards.
Tom Hackett averaged 42.7 yards per punt on six punts (256 yards) with a long of 53 yards.
Andy Phillips went 1-for-1 in field goals with a 37-yard score in the fourth quarter. He is now 2-for-4 this season and 42-of-52 for his career. He was 3-for-3 on PAT attempts (6-for-6) and is now 91-of-92 for his career.
