PULLMAN, Wash. - The Utah volleyball team dropped its first Pac-12 conference match of the season, falling in three sets (19-25, 20-25, 14-25) to the Washington State Cougars Saturday evening at Bohler Gym in Pullman, Wash.
The Utes (7-6, 1-1 Pac-12) was limited to just a .102 hitting percentage, while the Cougars (12-2, 1-1 Pac-12) hit .295 and recorded 15.0 total team blocks. WSU won its fourth straight match against the Utes inside Bohler Gym and moved to 6-1 all-time when facing Utah at home.
Runs of 7-1 and 7-2 in the first set helped the Cougars establish a 20-14 lead late in the first set and while the Utes managed to trade points with the home squad late in the frame, it was too late as WSU won 25-19 to go up 1-0 in the match.
Both teams would trade points early in the second set, but the Cougars later managed to go on a 7-1 run and led 13-8, which forced Utah to call a timeout. WSU extended its lead to 17-11, but Utah countered with a 5-2 run to pull within three points, down 19-16, but WSU came right back with a pair of kills and Utah was forced to call another timeout, down 21-16.
WSU would score the next three points to go up 24-16, but Utah clawed its way back four straight points and WSU was forced to call a timeout after seeing its lead shrink to just four points, 24-20. Out of the timeout WSU's McKenna Woodford connected on a kill and the Cougars took the set 25-20, along with a 2-0 lead in the set.
Utah opened the third set with a kill from senior Brenna DeYoung, but that would prove to be the Utes' only lead in the set as WSU used runs of 7-3 and 10-2 to take a commanding lead, 18-8 midway through the frame. Utah called a timeout after going down 20-10, but the Cougars yielded just four more points to the Utes en route to the 25-14 win in set three.
Sophomore Adora Anae led the Utes with 10 kills and fellow sophomore Eliza Katoa followed with eight kills on the evening. Junior Tess Sutton led all Utah players with eight digs, while junior Alyssa Koenig tallied a team-high three total blocks.
The Utes close out a three-match road swing next week with matches against Oregon State and Oregon. Utah will take on the Beavers next Friday, Oct. 2, and will then finish the weekend with a match at Oregon on Saturday, Oct. 3.
